Pippin producers Barry and Fran Weissler have barely had time to revel in their latest Tony win, but the power producing duo has already revealed their latest project: a musical adaptation of the 2007 film Waitress.
The Weisslers will reunite with their Tony-winning Pippin director Diane Paulus, who will helm Waitress. The show will also mark the Broadway scoring debut of recording artist Sara Bareilles, who will pen the music and lyrics along with Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel’s book. Weissler didn't offer details on where or when the show will debut.
Waitress tells the story of a pregnant waitress in the south trapped in an abusive marriage and looking for a happy ending, which she may or may not find when a charming doctor moves to town. The indie film was a hit with critics, but also made news after the murder of its writer and director Adrienne Shelly.
